Etgar Keret: Based on a True Story

I made this feature film together with my friend Rutger Lemm, whom I know from high school. Back then we both loved the short stories of Israeli writer Etgar Keret and 15 years later we decided to make a documentary on him. The end result is a mixture of documentary filmmaking, fiction and animation.

It won an International Emmy Award, two prizes at the Prix Italia, two prizes at the Master of Art-festival in Sofia, ‘Best Documentary’ at the Jewish Film Festival in Warsaw and the Jury Award at le Fifa in Montréal.

“This hybrid documentary about Etgar Keret has, however, an unusual approach to an unusual writer. Mixing interviews, fiction scenes and animation, Etgar Keret: Based on a True Story (2018) is not the typical biographical film, but a highly entertaining portrait that captures Keret’s vibrant personality and his inner process of finding stories.” - The Modern Times

Jury le Fifa Montréal: “Everyone fell in love with the form and substance of this documentary about an author. Inspired by his subject’s incredible style, the director had the jury laughing out loud even as he offered a deep reflection on the art of storytelling. In a world that often seems senseless, Keret offers a way to reconcile ourselves with the absurdity of life, and his art is a breath of fresh air.”
